Tour Overview
Experience Mount Kilimanjaro on an affordable six-day group climbing adventure via the scenic Machame Route, starting with your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Designed for adventurous travellers seeking a professionally guided mountain expedition at a reasonable cost, this group trek combines breathtaking landscapes, shared camping experiences and the challenge of reaching Africa's highest summit.
Your journey begins with an airport pickup and transfer to Moshi, the main gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro. Before the climb, you will meet your mountain guide for a detailed briefing, equipment inspection and final preparations. The following morning, your group travels to Machame Gate, where the six-day trekking adventure begins.
The Machame Route, popularly known as the Whiskey Route, is celebrated for its varied scenery and challenging hiking trails. During your ascent, you will walk through tropical rainforest, open moorland, volcanic landscapes and high-altitude alpine desert before attempting Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres above sea level.
The route also includes some of Kilimanjaro's most memorable natural landmarks, including the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall and the spectacular summit approach via Stella Point.
Throughout the expedition, experienced local mountain guides, cooks and porters support the group. Accommodation on the mountain is provided in shared camping tents, while freshly prepared meals help climbers maintain their energy during the journey.
The six-day Machame itinerary is physically demanding, particularly during the long ascent from Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp and the summit attempt. Climbers should arrive with good physical fitness, suitable equipment and realistic expectations about high-altitude trekking.
For travellers who prefer additional time to acclimatize, the seven-day Machame Route may be a more comfortable alternative.
Join Mbega African Safaris for an unforgettable group Kilimanjaro climbing experience that combines professional local support, beautiful mountain scenery and the opportunity to stand on the Roof of Africa.

Tour Plan Itineraries
Day 01Moshi to Machame Gate and Machame Camp⌄
After an early breakfast at your hotel in Moshi, meet your mountain guide and fellow climbers before departing for Machame Gate, the starting point of your Kilimanjaro expedition.
The journey passes through local communities, banana plantations and green agricultural landscapes along the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Upon reaching Machame Gate, your guide will complete the necessary park registration procedures while the mountain crew prepares the equipment and supplies.
Your trek begins through the beautiful tropical rainforest, where towering trees, thick vegetation and the sounds of mountain birds create a remarkable natural environment.
The trail gradually climbs through the forest along muddy sections, exposed roots and winding paths. Depending on weather conditions, the route may be slippery, particularly during the rainy season.
Your guide will maintain a comfortable walking pace and encourage regular hydration and short breaks.
As you gain altitude, the vegetation becomes less dense and the surrounding scenery begins to change. Eventually, you will reach Machame Camp, where your tents will be prepared for your first night on the mountain.
Enjoy a freshly prepared dinner before resting under the mountain sky.
Hiking Distance: Approximately 11 km
Hiking Time: 5 to 7 hours
Elevation: 1,800 m to 3,000 m
Accommodation: Machame Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 02Machame Camp to Shira Camp⌄
Wake up to the fresh mountain air and enjoy breakfast while admiring the surrounding views.
Today's trek takes you out of the rainforest and into the open heath and moorland zone. The landscape changes dramatically as large trees give way to smaller shrubs, giant heather and rocky mountain terrain.
The trail begins with a steady ascent along a ridge offering impressive views of the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro. On clear days, you may enjoy beautiful views of Mount Meru rising above the distant landscape.
As you continue climbing, the vegetation becomes increasingly sparse, revealing the wide volcanic scenery of the Shira Plateau.
Although today's hiking distance is shorter than the first day, the ascent is steeper and the increasing altitude may make the journey more demanding.
Your guide will encourage you to walk slowly and drink sufficient water to help your body adjust to the elevation.
After crossing sections of the Shira Plateau, arrive at Shira Camp, where you will spend your second night.
The campsite offers impressive views across the mountain landscape and, when conditions are clear, excellent opportunities for mountain photography.
Enjoy dinner and a relaxing evening while preparing for the next day's important acclimatization hike.
Hiking Distance: Approximately 5 km
Hiking Time: 4 to 6 hours
Elevation: 3,000 m to 3,840 m
Accommodation: Shira Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 03Shira Camp to Lava Tower and Barranco Camp⌄
After breakfast, begin one of the most important acclimatization days of your Kilimanjaro climbing adventure.
Leaving Shira Camp, the trail gradually ascends through rocky terrain toward the famous Lava Tower, a volcanic rock formation standing at approximately 4,600 metres above sea level.
The surrounding landscape changes into a harsh alpine desert, with fewer plants, colder temperatures and breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro's volcanic formations.
As you gain elevation, you may notice the effects of reduced oxygen levels. Your guide will monitor the group's condition and encourage a slow, steady walking pace.
The ascent toward Lava Tower provides an opportunity for your body to experience higher altitude before descending to a lower sleeping elevation.
After lunch in the Lava Tower area, continue downhill toward Barranco Valley.
Along the descent, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic, with giant groundsels and other distinctive high-altitude plants appearing along the trail.
Eventually, you will arrive at Barranco Camp, situated beneath the impressive Barranco Wall.
The campsite provides magnificent views of the surrounding valleys and Kilimanjaro's southern glaciers when visibility is good.
Enjoy dinner with your group and rest before the next day's challenging climb.
Hiking Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking Time: 6 to 8 hours
Elevation: 3,840 m to 4,600 m and down to 3,960 m
Accommodation: Barranco Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 04Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp via Karanga Valley⌄
After an early breakfast, prepare for one of the most adventurous and physically demanding days of the Machame Route.
The morning begins with an ascent of the famous Barranco Wall, a steep rocky section that requires careful scrambling using both hands and feet in certain places.
Although the wall looks intimidating from below, the normal trekking route does not require technical rock-climbing equipment. Your mountain guides will assist you through the more challenging sections.
After reaching the top, take time to appreciate spectacular views of the Barranco Valley and the surrounding mountain scenery.
Continue across a series of ridges and valleys toward Karanga Valley, where the group will stop for lunch and rest.
Unlike the seven-day Machame itinerary, the six-day route does not include an overnight stay at Karanga Camp. Instead, you will continue climbing toward Barafu Camp on the same day.
The landscape becomes increasingly rocky and exposed as you approach the high-altitude campsite.
Upon reaching Barafu Camp, your support team will prepare an early dinner while your guide explains the summit schedule.
You will need to organize your summit clothing, headlamp, drinking water and personal equipment before resting for a few hours.
The summit attempt normally begins around midnight, depending on weather conditions and the guide's assessment.
Hiking Distance: Approximately 8 to 9 km
Hiking Time: 7 to 9 hours
Elevation: 3,960 m to approximately 4,670 m
Accommodation: Barafu Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 05Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Mweka Camp⌄
Your summit adventure begins around midnight after a light meal and warm drinks.
Wearing your warmest mountain clothing and using headlamps to illuminate the trail, begin the slow ascent toward the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
This is the most physically demanding section of the entire expedition.
The route follows steep volcanic slopes, loose scree and rocky terrain as you gradually climb toward Stella Point on the crater rim.
Your guide will maintain a slow and consistent pace while monitoring your condition throughout the ascent.
The combination of high altitude, low temperatures, strong winds and reduced oxygen makes the summit attempt especially challenging.
After reaching Stella Point at approximately 5,756 metres, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
If weather and physical conditions allow, you will reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres above sea level.
Standing at the summit offers an extraordinary sense of achievement, with remarkable views of the surrounding glaciers and volcanic landscape.
After celebrating and taking photographs, begin your descent toward Barafu Camp.
The descent requires concentration, particularly along loose volcanic slopes.
At Barafu Camp, enjoy a short rest and meal before continuing downhill toward Mweka Camp.
As the altitude decreases, the landscape gradually changes and breathing usually becomes easier.
Arrive at Mweka Camp for dinner and your final overnight stay on the mountain.
Hiking Distance: Approximately 16 to 17 km
Hiking Time: 12 to 16 hours
Elevation: 4,670 m to 5,895 m and down to approximately 3,100 m
Accommodation: Mweka Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 06Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and Return to Moshi⌄
Enjoy your final breakfast on Mount Kilimanjaro before beginning the last stage of your adventure.
Today's descent takes you through the beautiful mountain rainforest along the Mweka Route.
The trail gradually descends through lush vegetation, tall trees and forest paths where you may encounter different bird species and occasionally monkeys.
Although the descent is generally easier than the summit climb, the trail can be muddy and slippery, particularly after rainfall.
Take your time and follow the instructions of your guide as you make your way toward Mweka Gate.
Upon arriving at the gate, complete the final park exit procedures and celebrate the successful completion of your six-day Kilimanjaro trekking expedition.
Eligible climbers will receive their official Kilimanjaro summit certificates according to the highest recognized summit point reached.
Your Mbega African Safaris transfer vehicle will then take you back to Moshi.
After several days of camping and trekking, enjoy a refreshing shower and well-deserved rest.
This marks the end of your six-day group budget Kilimanjaro climbing adventure.
